I’ve had a much needed ‘spring clean’ on the site and deleted lots of bears which have sold out – but they can still be viewed on the archive pages. I’ve introduced some new bears who represent a new style I have been developing (see Cameron, Dylan and Danny). These bears have a new style of limb which is slightly more ‘naturalistic’ than the conventional teddy bear. This new style means that the bears are not able to stand unaided as most of my bears can – but that would hide their detailed footpads which is their best feature!! Also introduced are a range of ‘one off’ freestanding bears with double jointed necks. They happened after a clear out of my mohair shelves revealed several pieces of fabric which were just about big enough for one bear! I’ve also recently embarked on the ‘Fairy Bear’ theme. Holly is my first attempt. I’ve hand made and painted her pretty wings and she has a very detailed costumes – she was fun to make and hopefully I’ll find time to make her some companions later! When photographing these new bears, I have included some ‘close up’ shots of their heads. This means you can see all the detail which is generally lost in a full shot and you can see the lengths I go to, to achieve the perfect expression. Please note that I will not be attending the ‘Winter Bearfest’ this coming February as I will be working in Japan. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

There are 2 new bears and a rabbit for you to meet this month. Donovan is a double neck jointed bear made from dense luxurious camel coloured mohair. He has ‘honey bear’ turned down paw pads. He will have a big brother soon – he is magnificent! Gus is my smallest double neck joint bear to date at 9 inches (23cm) he is made from caramel short pile mohair which has a sprinkling of black hairs. Campion is a fairly realistic jointed rabbit. He has cute turned down ‘bunny paws’ and the obligatory big feet. I wanted my rabbit to be as realistic as possible without compromising the basic jointed animal principle. So many rabbits are just teddy bears with big ears and big feet and are also a bit ‘cutesy’ for my taste. However, as I love the ‘little Grey Rabbit’ stories by Alison Uttley, don’t be surprised to see versions of ‘Campion’ dressed up! Hope you like the new additions – by the way, they can all stand unaided.

2003 begins my 16th year as a bear artist – so to celebrate that fact I’ve made a hedgehog! Just when all respectable hedgehogs are hibernating. Harry is very sweet, fully jointed with a warm scarf to keep out the winter chill. The Christmas holidays gave me a chance to play around with some new ideas. I have always wanted to make a bear with a Steiff ‘Petsy’ head which is made with 4 pieces and does not have the conventional gusset. It was an interesting and sometimes frustrating experience – I made 10 heads before I was happy with the result. So I present ‘Hugo’. I would be interested in hearing your comments – good or bad – about him. In a more traditional Bocs Teganau style is Frederick whom I love (Number 1 is mine). He wears a russet red felt jacket and check trousers. He has an endearing wobbly head which really does add to his personality when you’re having a ‘one to one’ with him!! In the next month or so I will be introducing some new open-mouth bears and also some gollies. Plus a replacement for Bing who sold out quickly – it seems you gave a thumbs-up to my use of synthetic plush. Thanks!!! Don’t forget that the 15% discount will apply until the end of February 2003. Best wishes Sue

It recently occurred to me that I have been making Bocs Teganau bears for 15 years now! I can’t let that go unannounced so, to celebrate, I am offering 15% off all bears until February 2003!! I have recently returned from Japan and am now fired up to produce a new range of bears to celebrate 15 years of bear making. I’ve decided that I want them to have more ‘presence’ so, expect some bigger bears like ‘Ernest’ who is 13 inches (33cm) high and wears very smart, fully lined, sailors jacket. He is gorgeous and I’m proud of him. I hope you feel the same. Another bigger bear is Bing. I was recently tempted by a length of synthetic fabric and Bing, the resulting bear is very handsome. Of course, I can't neglect the smaller bears so have a look at ‘Monty’ and ‘George’. They are both 9” (23cm) high and, when I finished them I discovered they could both stand unaided! They obviously both felt they could show their own presence in the company of their larger brothers!!! Last but not least is ‘Sailor Blue’ – he can't stand unaided, he has lost his land legs! A few years ago I made a range of gollies. After a while the bears crowded them out and I couldn’t find the time for more gollies. But collectors still ask me if any new ones are planned. I was determined that there should be some more so, for now just the one! Golly Reggie is 11” (29cm), a fully jointed, traditionally dressed golly. There are more to come. Watch this space. I will be at the British Bear Fair at Hove Town Hall on December 8th. Unfortunately, due to the totally unexpected death of my younger brother Andrew, I didn’t get round to booking a stand but Sandra Wickenden has offered me a space on hers. So come along and see both of us! Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Peaceful and Happy New Year.
